Larry James Hilburger (b. 1954, Buffalo, New York) is a self-taught oil painter. He took basic art at Cleveland Hill High School near Buffalo in the early 1970s and enjoyed watercolor in particular. He committed to oil painting in 1985 and has been working in oil ever since.
For two decades his studio and residence sat on a farm in Westfield, New York, by Lake Erie, where he painted from 1985 until 2006. He now lives in Angola, NY, retired but still painting. Over forty years he has produced more than three hundred works. In his own words, the work is abstract landscapes, or even dreamscapes, and a heavy dose of geometrics. He paints without formal training, guided by curiosity and instinct rather than a school or a movement.
His stated goal, from a 1996 artist statement: bright, colorful, imaginative, unusual.
Hilburger is published by Wind & Pages, an independent press based in Western New York.
Quotable
In his own words.
-
"I needed a creative outlet. I found my older brother's art brushes and oil paints in the basement, left behind when he moved out. Both my older brother and sister did oil painting, so I thought I'd give it a try."
